How to Plant Your Daylilies

If you recently purchased
bareroot daylilies from LeLou Blooms,
THANK YOU!

Bareroot daylilies are easy to plant and thrive (especially in Louisiana’s warm, humid climate). These hardy perennials reward you with vibrant blooms and low-maintenance beauty year after year. They can tolerate heat, and they flourished after the rare snowfall of 2025!

Here's how to start planting and blooming!

Timing
Best planting time: Early spring (February–April) or early fall (September–October).
Avoid planting during extreme summer heat or right before a hard freeze.

Preparing the Roots
Keep roots moist until planting—don’t let them dry out, yet don't drown them.

Planting in the Ground
Choose a site with:
Full sun (at least 6 hours daily)
Well-drained, fertile soil

Dig a hole 12 inches wide and 6–8 inches deep.
Form a small mound in the center and spread roots over it.
Position the crown (where roots meet leaves) 1 inch below soil level.
Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly.

Spacing & Transplanting
Space plants 18–24 inches apart to allow for mature growth (mine are closer due to abundance of daylilies and lack of space)
Water deeply after planting and continue watering 2–3 times per week for the first month.
Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
If transplanting from pots, follow the same planting depth and spacing.

Care Tips
Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year.
Fertilize in early spring and again after blooming with a balanced fertilizer.
Divide clumps every 3–5 years in early spring or fall to maintain vigor.
